Here is a small portion of our bookshelf:
It looks a bit empty because MOST of the books are on the floor.
As a temporary solution we're using these magazine files from IKEA that we had on hand, plus some images I swiped from the interwebs. I trimmed down the height of the file.
So far so good. The kids like to sort the books and put them away.

Years ago, and only for a short while, Ikea had wood magazine holders that were cheap (like $3 each, not the super expensive ones they have now...) So maybe keep your eyes open in case they magically show up again? I have a few, and they've survived the past 5 years looking nice & pretty. Plus, you can paint them to match your room.
ooOOOooh. I'm glad you mentioned those. I wonder if those wood ones would hold up to a little bit of saw and sanding.
Hi! I just found your blog and have had fun looking 'round.
Two ideas for the books:
First, instead of buying the file boxes, you could cut down empty cereal boxes. Not as nice looking but free if you buy breakfast cereal, and therefore not a big deal to replace.
Second, if you have the room on your walls, you could try rain gutter book shelves (bing or google it). Kids love being able to see the fronts of the books.
